PERU & BOLIVIA 2024
Welcome to our Blog!
Hello Readers!
We are excited to announce a series of blog posts for the next four months, where we will share details from our recent trip to Peru and Bolivia last November/December! During this time we had the opportunity to undergo a research project funded through the Canada Council to visit museums, community artists, educators, and arts workers to learn about projects which foreground the recovery and preservation of craft traditions – textiles and ceramics in particular. Our trip, although highly scheduled and planned, was also filled with many beautiful connections and surprises which enriched our learnings throughout this journey!
We would like to extend a special thank you to:
Dimitri Manga, for teaching us how to make ceramic sing
Rosa García, for your dedication and passion for textiles
Rosa Varillas, for sharing the bounty of your garden
Leslie Tucno, for guiding us through water and land
Mike, for being our unofficial tour guide of Iquitos
Karina Tarazona, for opening the doors to your treasures
Marcelina Chichaco and your family, for letting us make together
Johana Sarmiento, for the tears of joy and sadness
Yanett Melo, for sharing your story from student to teacher
Elvira Espejo Ayca, for being a badass and inviting us to dream together
Sadith Silvano, for sharing your song and your fights
Elvia Paucar, for your familial dedication to your craft
and Pocha & Wilson for your hospitality, and treating Cami like another daughter
We had the opportunity to delve deeply into Andean and Amazonian traditions, travelling from coast, to forest, to mountain, uncovering the access work that is left to be done by Canadian Museums who safeguard ritual objects and artworks of cultural significance from these regions. More to come soon!
xoxo
